How It Works

01

Drop your AVIF files

Drag and drop or select AVIF files. Requires Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+, or Edge 90+ for native AVIF decode.

02

Browser decodes AVIF

The browser's native AVIF decoder parses the HEIF container and decompresses the AV1-encoded image to RGBA pixels via createImageBitmap.

03

JPG encoding at quality 92

Pixels are drawn onto a Canvas with white background fill (JPG has no alpha) and exported as JPG via toBlob with DCT compression at quality 92.

04

Download your JPG files

Your JPG files open in any software and upload to any platform — no compatibility worries.

// under the hood

AVIF wraps AV1 still-image compression in a HEIF container, achieving ~50% smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality through advanced intra-frame prediction. Our converter uses the browser's native AVIF decoder via createImageBitmap to decode to RGBA pixels, draws them onto an HTML Canvas with white background fill, then exports as JPG at quality 92 via toBlob. JPG uses DCT lossy compression with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF is a newer format (2019) and isn't supported by Photoshop CS6, Microsoft Office, older Android devices, many email clients, or marketplaces like eBay and Etsy. Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens in literally any image software or upload form.
Is there quality loss?
Some, yes — both AVIF and JPG are lossy formats, so transcoding adds a second encoding stage. We encode JPG at quality 92, which is visually transparent for most content. The original AVIF compression is the larger source of any visible artefacts; JPG at 92 typically preserves what's there.
What about transparency?
AVIF supports transparency, JPG does not. Any transparent AVIF pixels are flattened against a white background. If your AVIF has alpha you want to preserve, use AVIF to PNG instead.
Will my browser decode AVIF?
Yes if you're on Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+, or Edge 90+. The conversion uses the browser's native AVIF decoder via createImageBitmap. If you see a decode error, your browser is too old — update to convert AVIF files.
Are my files private?
Yes. The browser decodes AVIF locally and re-encodes as JPG using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device. No upload, no server, no telemetry.
