//when_to_use

When to Convert AVIF to PNG

  • Converting AVIF design assets to PNG for editing in Photoshop CS6 or other software that doesn't open AVIF
  • Preparing transparent AVIF logos as PNG for compositing into video editing software like Premiere Pro or Final Cut
  • Converting AVIF screenshots to PNG for inclusion in technical documentation that requires lossless images
  • Rasterising AVIF UI mockups to PNG for upload to design review tools like InVision or Marvel
  • Converting AVIF product images with alpha channel to PNG for use in e-commerce platforms that need transparency

//how_it_works

How It Works

01

Drop your AVIF files

Drag and drop or select AVIF files. Requires Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+, or Edge 90+ for native AVIF decode.

02

Browser decodes AVIF

The browser's native AVIF decoder parses the HEIF container and decompresses the AV1 stream including the alpha channel via createImageBitmap.

03

PNG export with alpha

Decoded RGBA pixels are drawn onto a transparent Canvas and exported as PNG via toBlob using DEFLATE lossless compression with 8-bit alpha.

04

Download your PNG files

Your lossless PNGs are ready for editing, compositing, or upload to any platform.

// under the hood

AVIF wraps AV1 still-image compression in a HEIF container, supporting alpha channel and 10-bit colour. Our converter uses the browser's native AVIF decoder via createImageBitmap to decode to RGBA pixels, draws them onto a transparent HTML Canvas, then exports as PNG via toBlob with DEFLATE lossless compression and 8-bit alpha. The output preserves every decoded pixel and transparency exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AVIF to PNG?
PNG is universally supported and preserves transparency, while AVIF is rejected by older software like Photoshop CS6, Microsoft Office, and many CMS uploaders. PNG is the right target if you need to edit, composite, or upload AVIF source images to platforms that don't accept AVIF.
Is the conversion lossless?
The PNG encode itself is lossless — DEFLATE compression preserves every pixel exactly as decoded. However, the original AVIF was lossy if encoded that way, so any compression artefacts in the AVIF source remain. Lossless AVIF inputs convert to perfectly preserved PNG output.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel, and PNG supports 8-bit alpha. Transparency is decoded from the AVIF and preserved exactly in the PNG output, including soft edges and partial transparency.
Why are PNG files larger than AVIF?
PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression while AVIF uses lossy AV1 intra-prediction — typically 5-10× larger files for AVIF→PNG. This is normal. PNG trades file size for losslessness and universal compatibility. If size matters more, use AVIF to JPG instead.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The browser decodes AVIF and encodes PNG locally using createImageBitmap and the Canvas API. Your AVIF files never leave your device.
